Why Many Self-Respecting Calvinists Struggle to Respect John MacArthur
Kim Riddlebarger has written a piece dealing with John Macarthur's serious verbal blunders and blatant misrepresenting of non-Dispensationalists at the most recent Shepherd's Conference. For those of you who don't know, Macarthur gave a speech entitled "Why Every Self Respecting Calvinist Is a Premillenialist." In it he made some very ungracious and ludicrous claims, including that amillenialism is only consistent for Arminians and that, if Calvin were alive today, he would join MacArthur's movement. He made these statements in the presence of the other speakers, his invited guests, many of whom are definitely NOT premillennial dispensationalists. Where's the Johnny Mac who's passionate about defending the true Gospel?!
If you ask me, I think he knows his movement is dying (and almost dead), and now he is on the defensive. Apparently, he feels that defending the future of types and shadows, abrogated by Jesus and the apostles, is at least as important as defending the Gospel of Jesus Christ, who is the ultimate fulfillment of those types and shadows. I debated in the beginning whether or not to post about this; it made me very angry, and so it was probably wise that I decided not to at the time. So, rather than try to tackle the Independent Fundamental Giant up in L.A., I'll direct you to someone much more able.

I agree. Macarthur's points were completely ridiculous. Macarthur's points of disagreement are, sadly, very consistent with another organization in the hills of PA that knows that the dispensational days of triumph are numbered.
Dr. Riddlebarger's response was beautiful. I thoroughly enjoyed the read.
If you could, pray for Tim Massaro, Jordan Harris, and I as we take an entire semester of "bologna" in Theo 5 this semester....eh
Who's teaching it? Is it still Schloegel? At least he's a really nice guy (personally!).
BTW, do you still have to read Ryrie's "Dispensationalism"? I should send you the paper I wrote on that! Ha! Schloegel actually kinda enjoyed some of the "inflamed" language!
oh, we surely do. i got my copy from my bro josh, who for some reason doesn't need it........
and ya, send me your paper....

I have thought the same thing on the matter... Have you every listened to the Narrow Mind with Gene Cook?? He did a two part series that critiqued this conference, which was excellent... I posted on it soon after the incident. Gene Cook systematically goes through MacArthur point by point and destroys his arguments... Very good stuff, it was called "Why Every Self Respecting Calvinist Should Know the Difference Between Israel after the Flesh and The Israel after the Promise."
Isn't that the the RB guy down in San Diego? Haven't heard him, but it sounds interesting.
Yeah, he is very interesting... I have listened to his views on covenantal amillennialism and it is pretty much in line with what many Reformed people say, which is weird because he is so dogmatic about believer only baptism... You should check it out
I was sadly disapointed when I heard MacArthur's reductionistic, ignorant, misinformed, and wrong presentation of amillenialism. He's stooped to the level of Ryrie, whose defense of dipsensationalism consists of strawman arguments and quotes by Reformed authors taken completely out their context. Anyway....how are you Matt? I'd love to read your paper on Ryrie's book as well. My email is genevancalvinator@gmail.com if you would like to send it. Hope all is well in sunny south California. I'm hoping to maybe join you in a few years for seminary!
I'm well, Jordan. Thanks. How about you, you old married man?! How's Angela? When are you coming out to Westminster Cali? I know you know that it's the best. Nobody else (of the Reformed seminaries) teaches Law/Gospel strongly--many wrongly think it's too Lutheran. And few teach Redemptive Historical preaching.
OK. Sorry for the sales pitch. That's alright, though; I know you already know that stuff.
I'd love to catch up with you sometime...
